BEYOND AUTOMATION:

Rethinking Education
in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

This workshop aims to create a rigorous space for examining how artificial intelligence is reshaping education at multiple levels, from classroom practice to the production of knowledge itself. Through a call for original research papers and keynote presentations by academic experts, the workshop will examine both empirical findings and critical perspectives that engage with the opportunities and tensions introduced by AI.

Contributors will be invited to explore themes such as the transformation of assessment in the context of generative models, the redefinition of academic integrity, the role of AI as a cognitive partner in learning processes, and the risks of over-reliance on automated systems. Particular attention is encouraged toward work that interrogates underlying assumptions, for example how AI systems encode biases, how they mediate access to knowledge, or how they may reshape disciplinary boundaries.

This workshop also wants to bridge practice and theory. Submissions may include classroom-based interventions, institutional strategies, or conceptual frameworks that help educators navigate uncertainty. Work grounded in specific contexts, especially from underrepresented regions or educational systems, is especially valuable, given that much of the current discourse is dominated by perspectives from a limited set of institutions.

The goal is to move the conversation from reactive adoption toward intentional design. By bringing together diverse research contributions, the workshop will map emerging directions, identify unresolved challenges, and contribute to a more nuanced understanding of what it means to teach and learn in a world where intelligence is no longer exclusively human.

Description of the Workshop

This proposed workshop will be built around two important activities: an open call for original research papers and the direct invitation of keynote speakers whose work is shaping current debates on AI and education.

The call for papers will invite submissions that engage critically and empirically with the evolving relationship between artificial intelligence and educational practice. Authors will be encouraged to submit original, unpublished work that addresses relevant questions, tensions and findings on the problem of AI and education combos. The call will be disseminated across academic networks, relevant mailing lists, and research communities to ensure both disciplinary diversity and international reach.

To ensure academic rigor, the workshop will establish a dedicated board of reviewers composed of scholars and practitioners with expertise in AI, education, and related interdisciplinary fields. Submissions will undergo a peer-review process designed to balance methodological excellence with conceptual originality. Accepted papers will be presented during the workshop in structured sessions that prioritize discussion and exchange. Authors will have the opportunity to receive feedback from both peers and senior researchers, creating a space that supports work in progress as well as more consolidated studies.

In parallel, the workshop will feature invited keynote speakers to on issues such as the epistemological implications of AI in education, the limits of current regulatory frameworks, or the future of expertise in AI-mediated learning environments, for example.

The planned length of the workshop

6 hours.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Beyond Automation:
Rethinking Education in the Age of ArtificiaI Intelligence

The rapid integration of artificial intelligence into educational contexts is shifting not only how we teach, but how knowledge is produced, evaluated, and distributed. Generative models, adaptive systems, and AI-assisted tools are now part of everyday academic practice, raising questions that go well beyond efficiency or access.

We invite contributions that engage with these changes at a deeper level. We are interested in work that examines not just what AI does in education, but how it reshapes our assumptions about learning, authorship, and expertise.

We invite authors to submit their original research papers on Artificial Intelligence and education, written in English. Submissions should present novel contributions, whether empirical, theoretical, or applied, that advance understanding in this evolving field.

We welcome contributions that question assumptions, explore tensions, and offer grounded insights into the evolving relationship between artificial intelligence and education.

Accepted papers will be presented orally during the workshop and included in the official proceedings. The proceedings will be published in the Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence (LNAI) series by Springer and indexed in Scopus.

Suggested Topics

Submissions may address, but are not limited to, the following themes:

Submission and Participation

All submissions will undergo a peer-review process conducted by an international board of experts.
Accepted papers will be scheduled for oral presentation and discussion during the workshop sessions.

To prepare your procedure (template, length, etc), please follow the Author Guidelines
as described on the main MICAI 2026 website.

IMPORTANT!
When you create a new submission on the MICAI 2026 online submission system, please MAKE SURE to select "Workshop on Beyond Automation: Rethinking Education in the Age of Artificial Intelligence". This will ensure that your submission will be considered for the workshop and not the general call.

All accepted papers from the Main Conference, Posters, and Workshops will be included in the MICAI proceedings, as follows:
